Associations of Interest to Journalists 

ASBPE American Society of Business Publication Editors.  Professional association for editors and writers in the business, trade, and specialty press. Valuable site, useful to anyone with a journalistic interest in business.  Excellent links.

ASME.  American Society of Magazine Editors.  Professional organization for editors of consumer magazines and business publications.  The obvious starting point for any questions regarding editorial policies and processes.  Especially interesting information on trends.

ASNE.  American Society of Newspaper Editors.  Professional organization for daily newspaper editors and related professions.  Much applies to magazines as well.  Strong supporters of First Amendment and freedom of information initiatives.  Large and valuable library of publications on sale for reasonable prices.

National Writers Union  Trade union for freelance and contract writers, including journalists, book authors, business and technical writers, and Web content providers.  Web site is a good source of useful information on subjects such as contracts, copyright, and issues affecting contributors.

Project for Excellence in Journalism.
  Nonpartisan, non-ideological organization specializing in empirical methods of  press research. Emphasis on content analysis, not criticism.  Sponsored by Pew Research Center.  Web site is an extraordinary source of data for anyone interested in print.  Much information on industry trends.

Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).  Some of the information on the organization’s Web site is of interest to journalists.

Society of Professional Journalists.  Founded in 1909, the SPJ is dedicated to the free practice of journalism and high standards of ethical behavior.  Special focus on First Amendment issues and education for journalists.
